A village with no cars, no traffic, no hurry
Sant'Angelo sits on the southern tip of Ischia, in the municipality of Serrara Fontana. It's entirely pedestrian: you leave the car in the paid parking lots uphill and walk down to the square, where fishermen still mend their nets next to boutique shops and gelaterie. The village is connected to a small rocky islet — the Torre di Sant'Angelo — by a narrow isthmus of sand that doubles as a beach.
How to get to Sant'Angelo from Hotel Bellavista
From our hotel in Forio you have three options:
- By bus: line CS or CD, getting off at Sant'Angelo (about 35–40 minutes). Tickets can be bought on board or at any tobacconist.
- By scooter or car: 25 minutes via Panza and Serrara, parking at the top of the village (Piazzale Serrara or Succhivo) and walking down.
- By boat: taxi-boats leave Forio and Sant'Angelo itself for the Maronti beach and the Sorgeto bay.
What to do in Sant'Angelo
Walk the isthmus and climb the Torre
The sand causeway separates two small bays. On the eastern side you'll find the Maronti strip; on the western side the fishing harbour. A short trail climbs the rocky islet with views over the entire south coast — go at sunset if you can.
Fumarole and natural thermal sand
Just east of the isthmus, towards the Maronti, the volcanic ground heats the sand to 90 °C in some spots. Locals cook eggs and chicken wrapped in foil — you can dig a small hollow and enjoy a free natural sauna.
Cavascura and the ancient thermal baths
A 15-minute walk along the Maronti (or a quick taxi-boat hop) takes you to Cavascura, thermal pools carved in a gorge used since Roman times. Rustic, atmospheric, unforgettable.
Aperitivo in the square
The piazzetta is the heart of village life. Tables spill out under bougainvillea; order a glass of local Biancolella and watch the boats come in.
Best time to visit
Sant'Angelo is delightful from April to October. July and August are lively but crowded — we suggest visiting in the morning or after 6pm. Shoulder season (May, June, September) gives you warm sea, fewer people and easier parking.
Useful tips
- Wear comfortable shoes: the village is all steps and cobblestones.
- ATMs are limited — carry some cash.
- Bring a swimsuit even for a short visit: the water is transparent and the beach is right there.
- Restaurants on the harbour front are scenic but pricier; the alleyways hide excellent, cheaper trattorias.
